The load-bearing column equation, commonly expressed through Euler’s buckling formula, predicts the critical axial load at which a slender column becomes unstable and bends sideways rather than simply compressing. The relation combines the material’s stiffness, the column’s cross-sectional geometry, its effective length, and its end conditions. A small change in length can matter enormously because buckling strength falls with the square of effective length. The equation therefore captures a dramatic structural threshold: below it, the column may remain straight; above it, failure can arrive suddenly under load. It is used primarily in structural engineering, mechanical design, and civil engineering.
