Pangaea was the enormous supercontinent that assembled most of Earth’s landmasses into a single connected body roughly 300 million years ago. Surrounded by the vast Panthalassa Ocean, it dramatically reshaped global geography, climate, and ecosystems. Over time, movements within Earth’s tectonic plates fractured Pangaea, opening new oceans and gradually separating the continents into their modern positions. Its breakup helps explain matching rock formations, mountain belts, fossils, and geological structures now found on continents separated by thousands of kilometers. Pangaea provides a sweeping snapshot of a constantly rearranging planet. It is studied primarily in plate tectonics, paleogeography, and paleoclimatology.
