Memory, reaction, and anticipation form a surprisingly general recipe for regulation.

The PID controller equation describes a feedback system that continuously corrects the difference between a desired value and the measured result. It combines three responses: proportional action reacts to the present error, integral action accumulates past error, and derivative action anticipates where the error is heading. Together, these terms can produce fast, accurate, and stable control when properly tuned. Too much gain can create oscillation; too little makes the system sluggish. Its strength lies in turning simple error measurements into smooth automatic correction. It is used primarily in industrial automation, robotics, and process control.
