Infinity is not an extremely large finite number.

The repeating decimal identity 0.999... = 1 states that an infinite string of nines after the decimal point is exactly equal to one, not merely close to it. The reason is that the gap between 0.999... and 1 shrinks without bound and, in the real numbers, no positive difference remains. It can be shown algebraically, through geometric series, or using limits. The identity is a compact demonstration of how infinite processes behave differently from finite approximations. What looks like endless approach ultimately becomes equality. It is used primarily in real analysis, calculus, and mathematics education.
